Expressive arts therapy is a natural way for people to express themselves and is extremely helpful for those who find it difficult to talk about illness, grief and anticipatory loss.
Sometimes finding the right words to express ourselves can be difficult. Our Expressive Arts Therapy Program can help. It is an effective approach for children, teens and adults to process feelings and thoughts through actions, fun and creativity. Art therapy is a natural way for people to express themselves and is particularly helpful for those who find it difficult to talk about family illness or anticipated loss. Through the use of arts and/or play, individuals have alternate means of communicating feelings, needs or concerns. It can enhance overall physical, mental and emotional well-being by reducing stress, increasing self-awareness and insight, and creating opportunities to experience the life-affirming pleasures of making art. A special art/play therapy room has arts & crafts supplies, books, a nature table, puppets, soft toys and sand tray, all of which are available when working with one of the counsellors. The space created is one of safety, security and privacy.
